Other forms: city councils

A city council is a group of lawmakers who govern an urban area or town. The members of a city council are elected by voters.

City councils are legislative bodies for cities around the U.S., and they're made up of anywhere from five to dozens of elected councilors, and often a mayor. The group's purpose is to decide on laws, services, and projects that will benefit the city — and how to come up with the money to pay for them. Funding schools, paving streets, providing parks, and collecting recycling are all items a city council might discuss. The Latin root of council means "meeting."
